If you can't weld, just say so.

I swapped out this bracket on my Subaru this weekend. It bolts to the side of the transmission and supports the weight of the catalytic converters. The old bracket has two of the most astonishingly bad welds that I've ever seen. I thought you all might get a kick out of it.

Better than any I've done. A lot better. Though all of mine are still holding.

+1 me

If by "astonishlingly bad" you mean it looks like about my welding skill level (aka: ugly as fuck, but atleast it doesn't break), then yes...

Still better than my welds (never touched a welder in my life)

Doesn't matter; still held.

I guess the thing that doesn't come across very well in the photos is that neither of the welds have any penetration. They are basically sitting on top of the crack. In the first picture, you can see that one of the welds doesn't even follow the crack.

Those are pretty ugly yes.

I can't diagnose what happened there but ugly welds tend to be weaker than beautiful welds, plus it looks like oxidation made its way into the base metal through the weld/weld gaps.

I only have experience with arc-welding thicker metal, never welded thin metal or used Tig/Mig/Mag.

My own experience welding indicates that if you can run a good bead with an arc welder, MIG is so easy that it feels like cheating.

Ah, I see it.

Well, from what I've seen it does look more forgiving than arc-welding (overhead, ouch) but I'm pretty sure that it takes a lot of skill to make the pretty-kind of gas-shielded welds.
